How We Place Custom Dental Crowns

A dental crown can repair a tooth and offer results that look natural and last for years to come. But when does a smile need one, and how we create and place a custom-made dental crown? In today’s blog, your Pella, IA, dentist talks about how we help smiles with custom dental crowns.

The Issues That Call for Crowns

When does a tooth benefit from the placement of a dental crown? The restoration will cover the entire visible portion of your tooth, so we can address a number of restorative issues. For example, we can treat cavities too severe for a filling, or even complete a root canal when a tooth is infected. Placement could address misshapen teeth and even improve chewing function and bite balance. We have placed them to repair cracked or chipped teeth. If you have missing teeth, then one or two could be used to secure a dental bridge, while one could complete a single tooth dental implant.

Creating and Placing Lifelike Restorations

Each one we offer our patients is custom-made, ensuring a proper fit, a balanced bite, and of course, a lifelike appearance. To get started, we will numb the tooth being treated so we can comfortably remove structure from it. We then take detailed digital images of the tooth from multiple angles, and use this in a lab setting to design and craft them. Once the restoration is ready, we will check the fit and make any necessary adjustments. We then attach the finished product with a powerful bonding agent. You now have a complete restoration that can last for years to come with proper care and attention!

Safeguarding Your Smile

The same steps that help ensure your restoration stays bright and secure will also help protect your natural teeth too. We suggest taking time to brush your teeth for two minutes when you wake up and then again before going to bed. Each session should last about two minutes, and we also urge you to floss before going to bed too. Try to cut back on the sugar in your diet and avoid tobacco products. Be sure you see our team for a checkup and cleaning every six months too, so we can safeguard your restoration and your smile as a whole.
