Why Do My Gums Bleed When I Brush?

Gum bleeding has had some misconceptions when it comes to oral hygiene. Some people believe they are just brushing too hard or that a minor mouth injury like a pizza burn has become irritated. While both of these are plausible reasons for bleeding during brushing, continued bleeding is not normal. If your gums bleed often, you may have gingivitis. Our Pella dentist, Dr. Jeffrey Allen, will explain why pink in the sink should not be ignored.

Understanding Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the beginning stages of gum disease. Recognizing and treating the symptoms of gingivitis is imperative because gum disease is a progressive illness. The longer you ignore signs of periodontal infection, the worse gum disease will grow. Early treatment will help prevent the spread of infection and worsening dental issues. Here are some signs you may need periodontal care:

  • Gum bleeding (especially during brushing)
  • Swollen or sensitive gums
  • Deep red or purple gum tissue
  • Foul mouth odors
