About gum disease: It’s what happens when your gum tissue becomes irritated as the result of exposure to plaque and its bacteria. Eventually, gum tissue will respond by pulling back, inflammation will occur, and you may also experience bleeding gums! You may even see bright red or purple tissue, your smile may feel sore, and you may have bad breath. In any case, this problem requires prompt care.
Don’t try to make your gum disease or other problem go away by either becoming more serious about brushing and flossing (or by figuring that pressing harder may help). While you should most certainly be brushing and flossing daily (brushing twice; flossing once), it won’t heal your gums. Excessive care may make matters worse.
Your bleeding gums should cause you to do just one thing in addition to providing good daily care: Call us right away! We’ll need to see your smile and you will likely require a deep cleaning to begin the healing process.
Take the time you need to schedule a periodontal visit with us when you notice your gums are bleeding, so you can protect your smile health. To learn more, schedule an appointment with your dentist by calling Allen & Neumann Family Dentistry in Pella, IA, today at (641) 628-1121.
