Q1. How are dental implants any better than dentures?
A1. This is a complex question with many answers. If a patient is comfortable with dentures, we certainly would not want to deter them from their choice. There are a lot of underlying facts that give dental implants an advantage, however. Among them:
Stability: Do you want to be able to eat all of your favorite foods with no concern of slipping? The titanium posts used for dental implants are firmly set into your jawbone so they won’t be going anywhere, even when you bite into an apple or devour a crispy corn-on-the-cob.
Convenience: Do you want to live a life free of extra cleaners and sticky adhesives as regular staples on your grocery list? Toothpaste, toothbrush, and floss will continue to be your standard means of oral hygiene when you opt for dental implants.
Q2. Are the faux teeth actually implanted in the mouth?
A2. No. Implanted into your jawbone are biocompatible titanium root replacements. These will serve as the attachment point for dental prosthetics (usually porcelain crowns) that will be designed to your specifications.
Q3. I’m not fussy. If these are the only reasons for dental implants, aren’t they too pricey to justify the pros?
A3. One big issue that serves as a tipping point sometimes when people are grappling over what way to replace missing teeth is facial collapse. Your teeth and roots do more than just help you chew and flash that gorgeous smile. They serve as a beacon for necessary nutrients and minerals to be sent to your jawbone, keeping it healthy and dense. When teeth are missing, your jawbone can begin to degrade. Your cheeks and face will start to sink in, making you look older than your actual years. Dental implants are viewed as an actual root by your body, so dental implants won’t just give you convenience and stability, but they will also keep your jawbone density healthy and youthful.
