Biannual dental checkups and cleanings are recommended so that gum disease can be detected at the earliest possible stage. Your dental hygienist can gently remove plaque and tartar buildup at the gumline. The removal of plaque helps protect your teeth and gums from inflammation and infection. Gum disease doesn’t always exhibit obvious symptoms, but if it should, some would include bad breath, pain in gingival tissues, swollen or puffy gum tissue, bleeding gums, redness, and/or purple discoloration on gums.
The best line of defense against gum disease is the removal of plaque build-up on a daily basis, and the removal of calculus (tartar) at your six month dental cleanings. Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoridated toothpaste. Floss at least once daily. You may also consider rinsing with a germ-killing mouthwash. If your gum disease appears to be progressing when Dr. Allen examines you at your checkup, he may recommend scaling plaque buildup from gums or root planing to clean and resurface deep tissues. Gum disease which is not treated can progress to periodontitis and result in gum recession and even tooth loss.
