When detected early, and treated promptly, cavities can often be addressed with a simple dental filling. Fillings can be made of metal, but most modern dentists offer tooth-colored fillings made of composite resin, which are not only great for people with metal allergies, but they also bond well with teeth and provide more seamless smile restorations.
After thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing any teeth affected by cavities, the dentist can then apply the resin, which will be hardened using a special light. Once complete, this should provide a beautiful and durable form of protection against further decay as well as infection.
In the case of a severe cavity, including any that have led to infections requiring root canal treatment, a dental crown is likely needed to add further protection. Like a filling, a crown is made to protect an exposed interior of a tooth or a tooth made fragile by either decay or trauma. In the case of a moderate chip or crack, for instance, a crown can be used to help protect it from worsening. This can help prevent the need for a tooth extraction, and, because ceramic dental crowns can be made to closely match your existing teeth, they can also provide a beautiful way to restore your smile!
