Oral Health and Pregnancy: What You Should Know

Hygiene is important all of the time, but when you’re pregnant, special attention to your dental health is vital. Hormonal changes can increase the likelihood that you’ll develop gum disease, and the chronic oral infection can heighten your risk of preterm birth. However, precautions must be taken when you’re pregnant, and undergoing oral health care during this time is not recommended unless it is an emergency. To help you maintain good oral health for you and your baby’s sake, we discuss the importance of good oral health in the midst of pregnancy.

If You’re Planning Ahead

Preventive dental care is typically simple and minimally invasive, but when oral health issues like tooth decay and gum disease are allowed to progress, extensive work must often be done to stave off the infection. If you plan on getting pregnant, be sure to visit your dentist for a comprehensive examination first. If any dental concerns are present, then we will consult with you to devise a plan to get your smile back in tip-top shape.

Morning Sickness vs. Your Teeth

Morning sickness is a common symptom of pregnancy. While vomiting on a daily basis can be uncomfortable on its own, constant contact with your stomach’s acids can also erode your tooth enamel and pave the way for decay to eat your tooth’s structure. Be sure to brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day to minimize acid exposure. Reduce your chances of nausea by using bland-tasting toothpaste.
