‘Tis the season of travel to family and friends, and the talented doctors at your Pella, IA family dentist want to make sure your smile care stays strong at home and when you are away. In the excitement of packing a suitcase, dashing for a plane, or giving last minute instructions to the pet sitter, tooth care may be the last thing on your mind. We suggest maintaining twice daily brushing and flossing, drinking lots of water, and packing our phone number…just in case.
Forgot Your Toothpaste? Don’t Panic
What to do when you unpack your travel kit and notice something vital is missing: toothpaste! It’s fine to borrow toothpaste from your host, or even go without for a day or two. You can still use a toothbrush to gently clean tooth surfaces and dislodge food particles form the gum line. You may miss that fresh-breath tingle, but a few days without the fluoride boost of ADA-accepted toothpaste brands is unlikely to cause any harm.
Forgot Your Toothbrush? Don’t Share!
Forgetting your toothbrush is a bigger issue. Even a day without brushing can give plaque a chance to harden into tartar, which then cannot be removed by a toothbrush. Tartar is removed during your regularly scheduled preventive checkups and cleanings. Many hotels can give you a toothbrush to use, and they may even have packets of toothpaste for guests. Another option is a quick visit to a drugstore, or pre-packing a new toothbrush as a permanent part of your travel kit, for just such unexpected circumstances. Sharing a toothbrush is never a good idea.
