Tooth loss that is severe and too complicated to be addressed with a bridge or an individual dental implant may mean you need dentures. With full and partial options, we can help return your smile to full function and beauty again. In today’s blog, your Pella, IA, dentist talks about helping smiles with our full and partial dentures.
The Impact of Your Missing Teeth
When you have a more substantial case of tooth loss, this could limit meal options and deprive you of not only your favorite foods, but good nutritional intake too. Missing teeth also impact how clearly you speak, and could leave you feeling embarrassed about your appearance. To return full function and appearance to your smile, we can take on advanced tooth loss with a set of prosthetics.
Full Dentures
A full set of dentures, as the name implies, will replace every tooth on one or both arches. Our team will design them based on detailed digital images taken of your smile. We may extract the last few teeth and then take images and impressions. This will contain a full set of teeth set in an acrylic base, one that looks like gum tissue. The teeth will be made from ceramic and shaded to blend with your smile. They will also be able to handle daily bite forces and pressures. To hold them in place, we will use suction or possibly assistance with an adhesive.
Partial Prosthetics
What if you have multiple gaps in your smile, spread across the arch? In these cases, bridges are not enough but a full isn’t necessary either. For these situations, we could offer a partial. Again, this will be created based on detailed digital images and measurements we take of the bite. The prosthetic will contain new teeth set in an acrylic base, and will fit within the gaps of your smile. Metal clasps will attach to natural teeth to secure the prosthetic, and these clasps will be invisible once your denture is in place. With both options, they will need to be soaked and cleaned. They tend to last about 5 to 10 years before they need replacement as the jaw ridge changes shape.
