Professional Teeth Whitening Brightens Smiles

When you have unsightly stains on your teeth, this could be a source of embarrassment. But our team could help you brighten your smile! With professional teeth whitening, we can offer smiles up to eight shades brighter in some cases. In today’s blog, your Pella, IA, dentist talks about our teeth whitening treatments.

The Factors Behind Discoloration

Why do our smiles develop such unsightly stains? For some, a diet high in sugar combined with poor brushing and flossing habits can create plaque buildup, which makes stains more visible. Smoking cigarettes and using other tobacco products can stain your teeth too. If you consume beverages with dark pigments, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and soda, this could leave behind discoloration. As part of your treatment, we will assess the cause and severity of your teeth stains so our team can choose the best treatment option to remove them. If you have permanent discoloration, we could also mask them with dental bonding or porcelain veneers.

Our Custom Trays and Gel

Our take-home teeth whitening system can help brighten your teeth by several shades, often as many as eight. We will begin by taking detailed images and measurements of your smile with advanced digital systems, using these in a lab setting to design and craft your custom plastic trays. These fit snugly over your teeth, and ensure the gel is evenly spread across your smile and that it isn’t diluted by saliva. You will take the trays home, along with multiple plastic syringes of bleaching gel. At home, you will fill the trays with the gel and wear them for a set amount of time, usually a half hour to 45 minutes a day, or overnight if you have severe staining. The total treatment time falls between a week and ten days on average, and you can keep the trays and any remaining gel for touch-ups as needed in the months to come.

Keeping Teeth Shining

How do you ensure your new results will last for a long time? Good oral hygiene can help mitigate factors that stain teeth, like severe plaque buildup. You should brush your teeth for two minutes when you wake up and again before going to bed, and floss every evening. Try to cut back on the sugar and starch in your diet, and see our team for cleanings every six months so we can remove buildup and polish your teeth.
