Foods and Beverages that Harm Your Teeth

Many people watch what they eat to maintain their figure or preserve their overall health. However, less people take their oral health into consideration with what they eat and drink. In some cases, foods or beverages that may seem like healthy choices are actually harmful to your teeth. Dr. Jeffrey Allen and our team caution our patients against consuming acidic and sugary beverages and foods.

Acid and Sugar Harm Oral Health

Your teeth are surrounded by a strong enamel layer that guards your teeth from aggressive bacteria. However, when your teeth are exposed to acid, your enamel weakens. Enamel damage is permanent and often results in tooth decay. Along with acid, sugars present dangers to your oral health as well. The harmful bacteria in your mouth thrive off sugar compounds. Every time you eat or drink something sugary, it attracts bacteria. If your enamel is damaged, bacteria will attach to the vulnerable structures of your teeth.

Foods and Drinks You Should Avoid

  • Candy – All types.
  • Starches – Carbohydrates such as breads, rice, and pasta feed bacteria as well.
  • Juice – Many types of juice contain natural sugar along with additional sweeteners.
  • Pickled vegetables – Vegetables pickled in brine are very acidic.
  • Lemons – Along with many other citrus fruits, lemons naturally contain high levels of acid.
  • Fruit Smoothies – Although smoothies may seem like a healthy choice, they are both acidic and sugary. Smoothies are also dangerous because patients tend to sip on smoothies for a long period of time, prolonging exposure to acid and sugar.
  • Clear and Dark Sodas – These beverages contain citric, ascorbic, and phosphoric acid along with sugar.

We recommend that patients consume these foods and drinks in moderation. You should brush your teeth and rinse your mouth with water after consuming anything sugary or acidic as well, but wait about 30 minutes before doing so, as your enamel will be weakened and you will end up doing more harm than good.
